Global Hope 365 and the California Coalition to End Child Marriage hosted part two of the two-part Virtual Child Marriage Summit on Aug 5, 2020. The 90 minute summit included a panel discussion focused on the current law in California regarding Child Marriage and strategies for advocacy followed by a 40-minute working session on advocacy actions.

Global Hope 365, the California Coalition to End Child Marriage, and the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy at the UCI School of Law hosted part one of the two-part Virtual Child Marriage Summit. The 2-hour summit engaged participants in a dynamic and meaningful way to learn from expert speakers as well as learn from Child Marriage Survivors by listening to their stories.

Global Hope 365, like many nonprofits, has taken our advocacy online during the global pandemic. Global Hope 365 has been hosting monthly virtual coffee meetups with guests who are experts in promoting gender equality through ending human trafficking and child marriage. Campaigners around the United States celebrated an exceptional victory this month as Pennsylvania and Minnesota ended Child Marriage on May 8th and May 12th respectively. Pennsylvania and Minnesota became the third and fourth states to end child marriage after Delaware and New Jersey in spring 2018.

Global Hope 365 will co-host a fundraiser with Lorena and José Moreno at their home in Anaheim on Sunday, March 8, 2020, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. In 2020, Global Hope 365 will focus on bringing Human Trafficking awareness training to Orange County schools including public, charter and private schools.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month

Human Trafficking is estimated to be a $150 billion industry worldwide. That number includes $99 billion estimated for commercial sexual exploitation. Human Trafficking is expanding in the U.S. because there is “demand to purchase sex” and traffickers can make a large profit from exploiting girls and women.

The United Nations designated November 25th as A Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in the year 2000. Women's rights activists have acknowledged November 25th as a day against gender-based violence since 1981. This date was selected to honor the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo.

There has been a small movement in the United States to legalize prostitution and acknowledge prostituted men and women as “sex workers”. Their reasoning is that legalizing prostituted men and women will provide them with safety protections and allow the prostituted men and women to seek assistance from the police if they are assaulted by buyers of sex.

Louisiana is the latest state to prioritize old-fashioned patriarchy over the human rights of children.

Georgia has strengthened its protection of children. Is this a legal victory? No, but it is a vast improvement. At Global Hope 365, we consider legal protections for all children to be true legal victories. We support the adoption of legislation that restricts marriage to a contract between two consenting adults at a minimum age 18. These laws are called “No Child Marriage, No Exceptions” laws.
